FUNDOSCOPY

The ophthalmologist will carefully examine your retina to identify possible retinal weaknesses.

Preventive measures, especially in the case of symptoms, means visiting an ophthalmologist at least within a few days and being examined without symptoms:

  • if you are short-sighted
  • if retinal detachments have occurred in close relatives
  • if you have an eye injury
  • if you’ve had an eye operation (your ophthalmologist will be able to clarify your specific risk)
  • if your birth weight was very low.

Pre-stages of retinal holes can be found through a preventive examination. The prophylactic laser treatment in these precursors of retinal holes can prevent a real detachment of the retina, which otherwise could be the consequence. If the retina has become detached, this measure is no longer sufficient and it can only be treated with surgery.
